Do You Make New Year’s Resolutions?

Happy New Year! At this time of year, we’re bombarded with talk of New Year’s Resolutions. Some people swear off alcohol in January. Some people quit sugar, wheat or meat. Some people hastily become members of their local gym or sign up for a half marathon.

Many of us make these resolutions because we feel negative about ourselves. We could be fitter, thinner, healthier, nicer, better looking, kinder…and we make lofty goals to try and achieve that. But, aren’t we starting off the New Year in a negative way: criticizing ourselves for last year’s failures and making every intention to correct them? Where will we be in December 2015? Probably at the same place again. Frustrated with ourselves. Making a whole new set of resolutions for the next year.

I think it’s so important to start the New Year off on a positive note. Take simple steps to better health and wellness. I prefer to give myself mini challenges every month so this month, I’ve started spinning at my local YMCA. I like the adrenaline, the teacher (who is probably over 60 and looks so graceful on the bike!), the feeling it gives me and the energizing music. The first class was hard but it’s getting better and I feel great! I’m also doing a winter cleanse to reset my eating habits, add some winter recipes into my week and feel a little bit lighter. That’s all. I’m not going to be too hard on myself and I want to create healthy habits that will last all year, not just one week.

My husband has been a really big inspiration for me with resolutions. Two years ago, we did a 10 day detox together. He was very skeptical and I felt as if I was forcing him into it. But he loved it and afterwards continued for the rest of the month – well after I had given up. He stopped drinking caffeine, dairy and wheat. He has never looked better. He now has more energy for his two big passions: scuba diving and running. He completed the New York marathon in 2014 with a personal best. It’s just one small example of how a New Year’s resolution can ripple out to other areas of your life and keep going.
