As I write, I sit here surrounded by moving boxes, dust and empty Ikea shelving units. They say moving is one of the most stressful and emotional periods of your life. Oh yes, it’s true. There have been tears and tantrums and not just from my two year old daughter. Even though we are just moving a few blocks away, we have a whole six years’ and two kids’ worth of stuff to move out of this tiny place. I suddenly realize I’m not 18 anymore when I could just fit everything I needed into a backpack and move on.
Something that has really concerned me this past week in the middle of the crazy packing frenzy is what to eat when everything you own is in a box somewhere and you can’t find the right saucepan, blender or knife to cook with.
A couple of days ago, I didn’t have time to cook and spent the whole day eating out: milky coffee and blueberry muffin for breakfast from the local deli, turkey sandwich at lunch and thai takeout and lots of beer for dinner. And lots of cookies. I was literally eating all the food I warn my clients not to eat. I was dosing up on caffeine, white carbs and sugar just to make it through the day. What happened? I became grumpy, irritable, tired and a bit crazy. My regular diet of clean, organic whole foods was what I was craving but I was telling myself I didn’t have time to cook or look after myself because I was moving.
I took a step back. I reminded myself that this was exactly the time I needed to be strong, energetic and calm to get my family through the move. I made a little plan for myself and it went something like this:
1. Keep drinking those high protein, whole foods morning smoothies to start your day properly and for energy throughout the day.
2. Keep taking those high-quality multivitamins, probiotics and fish oils to supplement any vitamin and mineral deficiencies you experience through stress, poor diet and lack of sleep.
3. Save some items in your kitchen for cooking. One saucepan, one cast iron skillet and one wooden spoon is perfect for me. You’d be amazed by how much you can cook with just that.
4. Be creative with the contents of your fridge and freezer. Last night, we had a roast chicken-eggplant-tomato-pepper-onion-gluten-free pasta-basil pesto concoction. It was ready in 15 minutes, beating any NY pizza delivery guy. And it was truly delicious!
5. Keep aside some healthy snacks for extra energy. We’ve been munching on roasted sunflower seeds, almonds and apples to get us through packing.
What I have learned is moving can be horrible and exhausting. But, ultimately we are all packing up the memories and moving on to better places. Try not to make it too stressful. Get some rest, have a laugh when you can and a glass of wine doesn’t hurt either. Cheers!
